How Many Tennis Balls Can You Fit Into a Limousine?

This is a question that has been asked by students of various ages and has had difficulties answering. The Letterman show once had a segment that would award prizes to contestants who could answer the most questions on how many tennis balls they could fit in a limo, so people are curious about it.

Tennis Balls Size & Weight:

Tennis Balls Size:

There are three standard sizes of tennis balls.  The differences in the size of a tennis ball are, to a large degree, what allow players to compete with one another on any surface around the world.  A professional player will prefer different types of tennis balls depending on their playing style and the type of surface they’re playing on at any given time.

The three standard sizes include:

Junior Size:

The first and smallest size is junior-sized balls measuring 2 1/4 inches in diameter (or just under 1 inch less than 5 centimeters). This size is designed for children and recreational play and it’s unlikely you’ll ever see these types of tennis balls used during professional play.

Although there aren’t many junior-sized tennis balls, they are used for practice purposes and training purposes.  If you want to use tennis balls for your backyard game, any junior-sized ball will work just fine.

Regular Size:

The second standard size is known as the regular or standard tennis ball measuring 2 1/2 inches in diameter (or 5 centimeters). Most states require that all professional play be performed with this type of tennis ball which makes it more readily available than other types of tennis balls on the market.

Professional Size:

The third and final standard size is professional-sized tennis balls which measure 2 5/8 inches in diameter (or roughly 6 1/4 centimeters). This was actually originally a sports equipment manufacturer’s option but it has since become the official ball used for all professional tennis events.

Tennis Balls Weight:

As the size of tennis balls changes, so too does their weight. Although you’ll find that junior-sized tennis balls are lighter than regular or professional tennis balls, there aren’t any rigid rules about which ones should weigh what.

The standard sizes don’t come with a set weight range.  However, there is an average for each type of tennis ball.

Junior Size:

A junior-sized tennis ball weighs roughly between 11 and 12 grams (0.4-0.5 ounces).

Regular Size:

Regular-sized tennis balls typically weigh somewhere between 10 and 11 grams (roughly 0.35-0.4 ounces).

Professional Size:

Professional-sized tennis balls are always in this heavier weight class weighing roughly around 11 grams (0.4 ounces).

Tennis balls are weighed using a device known as the “string gauge machine” which is used to measure the amount of tension that can be placed on a ball before it begins to expand out of its normal shape.

How Many Tennis Balls Fit in a Limo?

First, we need to calculate the volume of the tennis ball. So, taking the average diameter of a tennis ball, i.e. 68 mm, the volume of a single tennis ball will be

How Many Tennis Balls Actually Fit in a Limo?

1 tennis ball volume = 164636.2 cubic mm = 164.6362 cubic cm

Average Limo volume =  L x W x H = 560.832 x 158.496 x 198.12 = 17610813.2325 cubic cm

Total Tennis Balls in 1 Limo = Limo Volume / Tennis Ball Volume

        = 17610813.2325 / 164.6362

        = 106968.049752 = 106968 tennis balls fit in a limo.

This value is for the Rolls-Royce Limo, as the volume is of that limo. For other models, it may differ.

How many tennis balls are in a cubic meter?

It largely depends on the diameter of the tennis ball. The cubic meter volume in centimeters will be 1000000 cubic cm. If we take the average diameter of a tennis ball volume, i.e. 164.6362 cubic cm, then we can get 1000000 / 164.6362 = 6073.99830657 = 6073 balls in one cubic meter.
