What Is the Purpose of the Net in Tennis? | What If There Is No Net?

The purpose of the net in tennis is to serve as a barrier between players in a match. It ensures that tennis balls do not pass over it and gives tennis players an easy place to play their volley shots.

When playing tennis, you usually hit the tennis ball with your wooden or graphite racquet and try to hit it within a certain area on the other side of the net (the opposing player’s tennis court) in order for your opponent to fail to make a return shot.

If you hit the tennis ball over the net and your opponent fails to make a return shot, any points are counted as being won by you. The net makes it easier for players to win points since it limits where tennis balls can land on the other side of it, encouraging tennis players to hit the ball to other areas on the tennis court.

What Is the Purpose of the Net in Tennis

A tennis net also encourages tennis players to use their volleys more often than their groundstrokes. Volley shots are quicker and easier for tennis players to play since they generally consist of only one or two quick steps towards the net before hitting the tennis ball.

You can’t hit a volley shot if there is no net present in front of you, so this encourages tennis players to take advantage of opportunities when they arise at the net to earn themselves an easier point.

Since there has been debate over whether or not tennis should be played with no-volley rules or without serve-and-volley rules, it is that having a tennis net is an advantage for tennis players who want to win a tennis match.

If tennis had no-volley rules, tennis players would have less of an incentive to use their volleys and they would probably try more groundstrokes instead.

Without the net, tennis wouldn’t be as fun or as interesting of a sport since it is an integral part of the game that encourages tennis players to play different types of shots instead of hitting all groundstrokes from behind the baseline.

Therefore tennis net’s sole purpose is to keep tennis balls from crossing it and give tennis players the opportunity to use their volleys more often. This encourages tennis players to play more interesting tennis games with all types of shots, instead of just their groundstrokes, which would make tennis less fun if there were no net present.

How High Is The Tennis Net?

Tennis nets vary in height depending on where they are being used. Most professional tennis matches use a net that is 3 feet high at its highest point and 2 feet at its lowest point when measured from the ground up to the top. This value differs slightly from one set of tennis courts to the next and is usually what tennis players themselves decide on when playing tennis.

The lower the tennis net height is, the more likely it will be that tennis balls will touch it or pass over it and create unpredictable bounces for players on both sides of the court.

Higher tennis net heights increase the chances of keeping every shot in and deterring any tennis player who attempts to hit a lob shot or otherwise play an aerial ball across the net.

What Would Happen If There Was No Net In Tennis?

If tennis had no net, there would be more incentive for tennis players to stay back at the baseline after every tennis shot because hitting it out of bounds on either side of the court would not result in a point for their opponent.

This could become rather boring if tennis were played this way since tennis is a much more exciting game when both tennis players are encouraged to use volleys as well as groundstrokes.

That being said, tennis would still exist without tennis nets but it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting of a game.

For that reason, tennis nets are an integral part of tennis gameplay that will hopefully never go away since they allow for entertaining volleys between two tennis players.
